Coronation of Emperor Ras Tafari

Article published in Kingston, Jamaica, the 8 of November of 1930 in the "Blackman" news paper.

> Last Sunday, a great ceremony took place at Addis Abbaba [Ababa], the capital of Abyssinia. It was the coronation of the new Emperor of Ethiopia - Ras Tafari. From reports and expectations, the scene was one of great splendour, and will long be remembered by those who were present.
> Several of the leading nations of Europe sent representatives to the coronation, thereby paying their respects to a rising Negro Nation that is destined to play a great part in the future history of the world.

> Abyssinia is the land of the blacks and we are glad to learn that even though Europeans have been trying to impress the Abyssinians that they are not belonging to the Negro Race, they have returned the retort that they are, and that they are proud to be so.

> Ras Tafari has travelled to Europe and America and is therefore no stranger to European hypocrisy and methods; he, therefore, must be regarded as a kind of a modern Emperor, and from what we understand and know of him, he intends to introduce modern methods and systems into his country. Already he has started to recruit from different sections of the world competent men in dIfferent branches of science to help to develop his country to the position that she should occupy among the other nations of the world.

> We do hope that Ras Tafari will live long to carry out his wonderful intentions. From what we have heard and what we do know, he is ready and willing to extend the hand of invitation to any Negro who desires to settle in his kingdom. We know of many who are gone to Abyssinia and who have given good report of the great possibilities there, which they are striving to take advantage of.

> The Psalmist prophesied that "Princes would come out of Egypt and Ethiopia would stretch forth her hands unto God" (Psalm 68:31). We have no doubt that the time is now come. Ethiopia is now really stretching forth her hands. This great kingdom of the East has been hidden for many centuries, but gradually she is rising to take a leading place in the world and it is for us of the Negro race to assist in every way to hold up the hand of Emperor Ras Tafari.

Blessed Empress Coronation Selabration!

Buruk Fikir!

Give thanks for this most hola day, this blessed anniversary of the crowning of I and I JAH as King of Kings and Lord of Lords Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah! This blessed occassion honours not only the King but the Queen of Ethiopia. It is a day for all Sistren to give thanks for their marriages and the Inity and love that they have found in the salvation of JAH RasTafari!

I just want to share my feelings on this occassion to honour the love and holy matrimony our God gave to His Empress with an excerpt of my manuscript:

The sacred reverence with which Husband and Wife treated Their Union and Family and the unique bond shared between King and Queen was even fulfilled on the day of Coronation when Crown Princess Menen became Empress. On November 2nd 1930, The Emperor took His Seat of Power having ordered all new royal attire and diadems to adorn His Queen and Their Princes and Princesses. She was thirty-nine years old and pregnant with Her last child Prince Sahle Sellassie.
It was the first time in Ethiopian Solomonic coronation history that an Empress-Consort be anointed and crowned on the same day as Her King before the same audience. This break in millennia of masculine anointing tradition was done at His request. Traditionally the Consort was crowned in a separate ceremony the following day. Father, Mother and Child (in womb) were publicly united on the Throne of Ethiopia and Judah, taking oaths to honour the Living God and Sovereign Land. At this ceremony the Emperor, showed His submission and love unto His Wife, His Fruitful Queen; but also Their shared union in service or marriage to Ethiopia and the Orthodox Church. The heirs of Her womb, Their princes, were entrusted to do the same.
The Emperor invited nations all over the world to bear witness to this break in hundreds of years of Ethiopian Israelite tradition. In the auditorium where the coronation took place, the King’s throne was decorated in red and gold, while the Queen’s in blue and gold. After Emperor Haile Sellassie I was crowned, Queen Menen entered the room dressed in a matching white silk communion robe. The Amharic version of Psalm 45 verses 9 to 11 was read as a prayer, bringing to mind the fulfilment of her personal journey as a Daughter and Wife becoming a Queen: These three verses were also very prophetical in outlining exactly who Empress Menen was and fast becoming.

“Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women;
At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.
Listen, O daughter, consider and incline your ear;
Forget your own people also, and your father’s house;
So the King will greatly desire your beauty;
    Because He is your Lord, worship Him.”
(Psalm 45: 9-11 NKJV)

The Empress was presented with a ring encrusted with diamonds, and then the red and gold coronation robes were placed upon her. The new Emperor received the Empress’ crown from the Archbishop and spoke the following words regarding His Empress,

“As I, with the will of God, have received this crown from your Holiness, I request the Empress to receive this crown and partake in the honor with me. There, I request your Holiness to put the crown on Empress Menen.”
Abuna Kyrilos took the crown from the Emperor and placed it on the Empress’s head as he made a prayer that the crown be one of knowledge and wisdom, sympathy and goodness…After receiving her crown, the Empress went to bow before the Emperor and returned to sit on her throne. Again the anthem was played, the canons roared and the multitude of women outside the church ululated in appreciation for Empress Menen. (Biography of Empress Menen Asfaw, Anjahli Parnell 2011, 41-42)

Have a most blessed and safe selabration binghi Ises wherever I and I trod in the Earth!
RasTafari love and power and supremacy!
Holy Menen I Sellassie I JAH RasTafari!
